Nah. Good coaches have good coaching skills. It’s just an opportunity for him to move into an on-field role.

I mean, it won’t hurt UGA’s S&C, and having him coach ST is a pretty low-risk way of letting him apply his good coaching skills in a different way.

It’s analogous to giving a brilliant English teacher an SAT Prep class.

BTW, the only way to talk about Kirby Smart and Tyler Sumner in the same post is to write, “Tyler Sumner was a Kirby Smart plant.”
    Thanks, Rastabot!

Is Cochran the guy from the 60 Minutes feature years ago?

The hiring of Cochran was not so much about letting him get on field coaching experience. It was more about trying to weaken Bama's team. Ga has to win the SEC championship to be assured or making the playoffs. Kirby thinks he knows what makes Bama tick and he is trying to throw a wrench in it. It may work but Saban is no dummy, he has always had multiple coaching and player attrition every year but continues to climb back to the top.

This hire is more about trying to weaken Bama to the point Georgia may be able to beat them. Coach smart game IQ can't match up to Saban's, so he has to try and bring down Bama's player development to try and beat them. "If you can't quite get up to their level you have to try and bring them down to your level.

“Scott did a really good job for us here and was a big part of our success, but he was looking for a new career path,” Saban told ESPN. “He wanted to get on to the field coaching and would like one day, I think, to be a head coach. We didn’t really have anything here to offer him along those lines, and Georgia did. I understand him wanting to take on that path.”

“We’re in a good position to bring in somebody at the top of their profession, and I think we’ll have a lot of people interested,” Saban said. “I’m excited to see who all is out there.”

In talking today to Nick Saban, he’s quick to credit Scott Cochran for what he meant to @AlabamaFTBL. But Saban also told me Cochran wanted to pursue a new career path as an on-the-field coach, which Saban understands, but Saban wasn’t ready to go that route with him at Bama.

Oh no, wut they gonna do? Be fine? Oh, OK.
Dude's 40 and has been with Saban for 13 years and hasn't been given the chance to coach, so read into that what you will.

Bama is likely going to get the S&C guy from Oregon who is also considered to be one of the best in the country.

They'll be fine, but it was still a good move by UGA.
