Thread: EagleWrath and the Shotgun Triple not the Pistol Option - NO, NO, No

Honestly, how many of today's college offenses wouldn't be "spread" by the standards of, say, 2002?

I remember playing Montana in the FCS NCG and Joe Glenn's team used two tight ends all day and gave the ball to Yohance Humphrey 100 times, and when App ran the Power I. I don't think you see offenses that look like that even in the NFL anymore.

It’s going to be fun to describe to kids in 15 years what a fullback was.

Our new Head Coach stated that our 2018 offensive playbook was not totally used, but this year our offense will be more advanced.

*I have been corrected in the use of the term Pistol Option.

This article was written after Fritz's 2014 GSU season on his run game. It has both diagrams and video.

Does this article emulate what our new HC wants to do with our Offensive run game??????????????????????????

Labels aren’t particularly useful, anyhow. “Flexbone” is kind of a misnomer for PJ’s offense, as that’s properly a formation in other coaches’ wishbone-dominant offenses (see DeBerry and Hatfield).

PJ’s much closer (as usual) in calling it the “spread option,” though the most useful label for the broadcast world might have been “spreadbone.”

    Anyways, EagleWrath is right.

I once heard a broadcaster strongly denying PJ’s terminology of “spread option.” As he was talking, Tech was running insanely wide OL splits and had WRs just inside the boundary in each direction. They even had an A-Back in a receiver position. They were almost as spread-out as a kickoff formation.

Yet to this commentator, it wasn’t “spread” because the QB was under center.

    Joke.

I do not care what any fan, game announcer, or sports writer call the offense that Georgia Southern runs as long our Eagles win football games,

I understand where you are comming from Valley. But if I'm going to study the offense for the upcoming season I want to be studying the right system. Many people now have stated that we do not run the Pistol Option so I was saving the wrong articles to read. Luckily I never started reading them yet, I just saved the sites.

TALON - Here are some links you might want to look at if you are wanting to study up on our offense:

These are some quick finds. I'd suggest you look closely at what Debesse used to do and compare it to what we did last year. You can expect continued evolution of his offense moving forward. The interesting thing I find when looking over articles, especially from opponents, is that nobody really knows what to expect. While I wouldn't call what we are doing now a "Pistol Option" there are absolutely some elements of a pistol option in Debesse's history and it simply could be that we haven't seen that deep into the existing playbook yet... or he may have scrapped that element based on his feelings around (lack of) success with it or how he feels it might perform against our conference competition. Believe me, our offense has a base system and then packages are designed each week to target weaknesses identified. If through scouting another team we see that we would have a significant advantage by moving under center, I'd highly expect you see us running more under center plays that week. Changes could be as simple as lining a slot player up slightly differently or using motion to get them to a spot where a defense doesn't react appropriately. Go back and watch the New Mexico offense from 2012 to 2017. Specifically look to see if you can identify changes in the offense through the seasons that might be personnel based or if you see any specific differences in a single season based on the defenses they face. What do they do against a 4-3 as opposed to a 3-4 or 5-2? The terminology is irrelevant honestly... you need to study film and look for in game changes and see how strategy changes based on what they see real time. One of the biggest things to watch is the offensive line. I spend entire games watching nothing but blocking and it's amazing how often you see adjustments not just in the game but during a series to how they are blocking plays.

    Enjoy!

    Thank you very much Pike.

It looks like you did a lot of resource finding for me and I am grateful!

I won't be able to look at these sites until tomorrow or SAterday and save the ones I want.

    Thanks again
