No idea. Been on the board maybe about 3 hours cumulative the last 6 months with the job change. On vacation this week, picked a bad week to come back

Although having zero plan on the line pretty much lines up with Tyson not having a plan for anything.

I'm not surprised by that. In my memory of 2014-15, Ellison had a strong sense of what the mesh read would be before he got the ball.

In 2016-17, however, we looked like we were riding the dive mesh in slow motion while optioned defenders sat there watching it.

Obviously, you can thoroughly read the dive in a veer-based offense, but I'm not sure you can do that in zone-read based option play. You must get the playside/backside flow developed quickly, and sending the ball in the right direction right away--even if it means pulling before the mesh or giving up the rock immediately--is an important part of that.

In other words, the dive mesh in the veer is part of the playside flow, so you have more time.

Meanwhile, the dive mesh in the zone-read is a static point within the flow of the play. As TS would say, you can't just sit there and read your key. Instead, you go into the snap with your mind more than half made up based on what you've seen before the snap.

This probably has absolutely nothing to do with Fields's comment, of course.

I don't even know what this means... that's alarming.

It doesn't mean anything. I remember when everyone got hyped off Ramsby's media day quote last year about how sophisticated Cook's option game was. Obviously, it wasn't. I think Fields is just trying to say last year was bad and this year isn't last year.

I used to be a reporter and the vast majority of players can't articulate what they're asked to do on the field. In fact, it's rare. During my time at Southern, Mark Williams and JR Revere were pretty much the only offensive players that could give a good analysis of the offense. The rest of the players were just athletes.
