For one thing I was at the Wofford playoff game last year sitting with my wife and in-laws on the Wofford side. We we were in the second section - the first section near the scoreboard end was ALL Georgia Southern folks. After one admitttedly bad call some douche threw a full open beer can from 30 rows up into the Wofford team side line. Didn't see who it was or I would have gone over and attempted to whup his a**, hopefylly with my former US Marine in-law with me. It was clearly some idiot from a group of Southern folks though - very embarrassing. I don't mind noise - even a little mild vulgarity - but throwing crap is over the top.

    Fan celebration cuts game short

    By Staff Writer

STATESBORO, Ga. -- The crumbling of the Paulson Stadium goal posts signified the conclusion of the Georgia Southern-Illinois State NCAA Division I-AA playoff game even if the scoreboard didn't.

Eagles sophomore safety Arkee Thompson intercepted Redbird quarterback Dusty Burk with 19 seconds remaining in the game. Before the officials could set the football for the final play of Southern's 28-17 victory, raucous fans toppled the uprights in the west end zone.

Forced to flee for the safety of the players and coaches, the officials signaled for the clock to run without lining up the contest's final play. Eagles fans began celebrating their second consecutive berth in the national championship game approximately three minutes before the completion of the game and encircled both goal posts.

"I was trying to get everybody off the field," Southern coach Paul Johnson said. "I didn't know what was going to happen."

NCAA reprimands Georgia Southern for fans' behavior

By From Staff and Wire Reports

Unruly fans could cost Georgia Southern the home-field advantage in future NCAA Division I-AA football playoffs.

The NCAA on Monday reprimanded Georgia Southern for the behavior of its fans at two playoff games in December and threatened to deny future home playoff games to the Statesboro school if fan behavior violates the NCAA's crowd-control policies.

It said Georgia Southern has agreed to implement crowd-control measures for the 2000 season.

The NCAA's football committee cited the university for the behavior of fans following quarterfinal and semifinal home playoff games.

We haven't done anything worse than any other school, but we get the hammer. The NCAA warned GSU after fans went on Wofford's field last year. How the hell can they hold our athletics department responsible for Wofford's crowd control?
